Steve Lacy fut le premier, après Sydney Bechet, à se consacrer uniquement au saxophone soprano. À travers sa souplesse, sa richesse de timbre et son swing, il donna à l'instrument un nouveau souffle et incita notamment John Coltrane à s'y mettre.
